As soon as we enter Pieria, we have our first chance  to enjoy its glorious beaches and sample the delicious fish and sea food caught offshore.

We have only to turn at the crossroad for Nea Agathoupolis and take the road for the coast, which lies just a short distance away. Nea Agathoupolis, Methoni, Makriyialos... one seaside halmet after another, in one of Greece's most beautiful vacation spots, all boasting fish tavernas - a tempting prospect for lovers of good food. Pinios River

Leaving Pieria, new high spots still await us. The first we come to is are the castle of Oria and the Vale of Tempe, the entrance to the rich plain Thessaly.

Famous Tempe, that lush gorge through which the river Pineios flows, has some of the most splendid vegetation in Greece. The national road winds through a narrow pass whose naked cliffs contrast vividly with the greenery below. A stop here is a must, to take a longer look at nature's wonders and to walk across the suspension bridge and pay our respects to the chapel of Agia Paraskevi and the nearby grotto.

Meteora

This part of our journey takes us northwest across the plain of Thessaly. It's a very special destination we're headed for now. We stop first at Trikala, with its castle overlooking the bridge over the river Lethaios that cuts through the town, and then on to Kalambaka and Kastraki. where you can stay while visiting the celebrated monasteries.

Precipitous rocks growing straight out of the earth rise vertically to a tremendous height; enormous pillars created eons ago, an astounding quirk of nature. And all the more extraordinary because of what man has added to them, for on their peaks pious monks built what must be the ultimate refuge. Between the 14th and 16th centuries, thirteen monasteries were erected on these outcroppings. Though now only six are occupied and visit able, they still provoke awe and admiration at the way they were constructed and the faith and determination that inspired them.
